Hair Loss And Breakage

A MySebDermTeam Member asked a question 💭
Olney, TX

Is the hair loss in breakage coming from medications I'm being treated with or is it coming from the illness of the dermatitis? Is there any way to get it to stop and to have it regrow?

For me it was the seb derm that was causing my hair loss. When I had a treatment that managed it well my hair stopped shedding. You can probably test it yourself.

Seborrheic dermatitis can lead to hair loss and breakage due to several factors:

1. Scratching and Irritation:
- Excessive scratching of itchy, inflamed areas can damage hair follicles, leading to hair loss.
- Irritated and inflamed skin can worsen with harsh shampoos and aggressive styling.

2. Gentle Scalp Care:
- Use gentle scalp care techniques to minimize irritation and protect hair follicles.
- Avoid harsh shampoos and aggressive styling.

3. Hair-Friendly Styling Tools:
- Use a soft-bristle brush or wide-tooth comb to minimize tugging or pulling.
- Avoid excessive styling and heat from styling tools.
- Gently dry hair with a soft towel instead of vigorously rubbing it.

4. Topical Treatments:
- Medicated shampoos, lotions, foams, and creams can help reduce inflammation and prevent excess sebum production.
- Consult a dermatologist to choose the proper topical treatment to soothe the scalp and prevent further damage to hair follicles.

By following these practices, you can help manage hair loss and breakage associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

I’m not sure if there is any connection between the two. I’ve never had any issue of the hair loss thats been because of anything besides age, and hair, growing on scars from surgeries I have had.

I've always shed a lot but in the last year it has become exponential to the point of driving me to read about hair loss! 😭 I'm also just over 50 so it could be hormonal?
