Overview
Synalar is a prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat skin inflammation and itching associated with skin conditions that respond to corticosteroids. Synalar is also known by its drug name, fluocinolone.

Synalar is a corticosteroid of mid-range potency. It is believed that Synalar works by suppressing immune system activity.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Synalar should be applied topically two to four times a day.

Synalar comes as a topical solution.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Synalar lists side effects including burning, itching, irritation, dryness, infection of the hair follicles and sweat ducts, excessive sweating, acne, lightening of skin patches, rash around the mouth, secondary infection, thinning and wrinkling of the skin, and stretch marks.

Rare but serious side effects listed for corticosteroids include high blood sugar and reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression (a dysfunction of the adrenal system).
